Each Summer Menard Electric Cooperative sponsors students on a tour of Washington, D.C. Students are chosen from those attending our Youth Day program based on an application and personal interview. This year's Youth to Washington trip is June 9-16, 2017.
On the Youth Tour more than 60 students from Illinois travel together and meet Illinois congressmen, tour many historic sites, receive information on career paths, learn about cooperatives and make lifelong friends. It is truly a remarkable trip that has been sponsored for more than 50 years by electric and telephone cooperatives across the United States.
In the past, participants have visited such places as Gettysburg; Arlington National Cemetery; the Iwo Jima, Lincoln, Jefferson, Korean War, Vietnam War, World War II, U.S. Marine Corps. and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorials; the Washington Monument; The Newseum, Holocaust, Smithsonian Air and Space, American History and Natural History Museums; the Saudi Arabia Embassy; and the National Archives. Students will also see the U.S. Capitol Building and meet Illinois Congressmen, Senators and their staffs.
Menard Electric Cooperative will sponsor high school students to Springfield for Youth Day on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, to tour the State Capitol and spend the morning meeting with their local legislators. They also toured the Old State Capitol and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and heard from several speakers. To be eligible high school juniors must live in a home with a parent/guardian who is an active member of Menard Electric Cooperative.
