Grassroots Legislative Conference in D.C.
Over 2,000 electric cooperative leaders from throughout the nation came together in Washington, D.C., April 8 – 11, 2018, for the annual NRECA Legislative Conference. Menard Electric Cooperative Directors Dennis Ryan and Donald McMillian were among the 50 electric cooperative representatives attending from Illinois. At the conference, they heard remarks from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman, and U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman.
Additionally, they had the opportunity to meet with members of Illinois’ Congressional delegation and their staffs’ on Capitol Hill to engage in a dialogue about co-op legislative and regulatory issues. This included visits with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Congressman Darin LaHood, Congressman Rodney Davis, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, and a legislative aide to U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth. Among key priorities that they discussed: supporting robust rural development programs in the 2018 Farm Bill; investing in rural broadband; thanking them for their recent support of the geothermal tax credit extension; and continuing our mission of providing safe, affordable and reliable electricity to our member-owners.
